ILO WORLD MODEL

ILO recognizes Canaan farmers union as model of rural development for the world

The International Labour Organization (ILO) features the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA) as a case study for successful rural development in their 'Learning from Catalyst of Rural Transformation' publication. The ILO was founded in 1919, in the wake of a destructive war, to pursue a vision based on the premise that universal, lasting peace can be established only if it is based on social justice.  The ILO became the first specialized agency of the UN in 1946.

The key message in the publication is that the determination and creativity of the indigenous people, especially rural men and women and young people, can overcome numerous challenges and transform rural economies and societies. Eight case studies from around the world are presented for the valuable lessons from their accomplishments as a model for world development and work generation.

SUCCESS: The PFTA has succeeded in directly improving the living and working conditions of its members and also their farming communities. That they were able to accomplish this development under military occupation is truly remarkable.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:  If you like what you read and want to continue the success story, you can help expand the market for fair trade Palestinian olive oil and foods so the PFTA can grow. There are farmers and producers in the West Bank and Gaza who would like to join the PFTA. Because Canaan commits to buying all their production, the PFTA has to limit its members to the size of the market. Your simple act of purchasing from Canaan and enjoying the fruits of our farmers fields will help more farming communities in Palestine gain fair trade benefits.

HISTORY: You might be interested in the founding of Canaan and the PFTA ten years ago. This study has an excellent history of the beginnings of Canaan Fair Trade and the fair trade movement in Palestine.
